Jen Free was perched near rink level at one of her oldest son’s hockey games.
She was running the clock, internally pondering why she was watching instead of playing the game herself. Despite never playing hockey in an organized fashion growing up, Free was an avid street hockey player in her youth.
Motivated by her passion for hockey, Free was compelled enough to found the Pittsburgh Women’s Ball Hockey League in August of 2020.
“I wanted to build something where people felt welcome, where everybody felt included, where people were committed to fostering a sense of camaraderie and inclusiveness and making sure everybody was welcome no matter what,” Free said. “There are already enough limitations for women all over the place, especially in sports.”
